Follow my logic here - I am a female . AND - I play bagpipes ( along with many other females in the world ! ) . Therefore , the answer to the first part of your question is a resounding YES !
As for part two of your question - weird is a relative term . Some folks think anything unknown , or outside their immediate world is "weird" . I suppose some may think playing bagpipes is weird too . But to many others - bagpipes are the ultimate instrument - both to play , and to listen to !! They are truly magical , and link us to an ancient past ! If you have the slightest inclination towards learning yourself - I urge you to give it a go !

If that's what you want to do, then that's what you should do. There will always be someone who thinks WHATEVER you do is weird, and there will always be those who think it's perfectly ok. The important thing it that YOU think it's interesting.
Personally, I don't see why a woman couldn't play bagpipes; women have a slightly larger lung capacity, so I would think that would be at least a small advantage. I suspect that the reason you don't see it traditionally speaking is that bagpipes were originally associated with fighting, and that has long been the realm of men in our world.

Yes, girls play the bagpipes. There is nothing at all weird about it. There are many girls in Scotland playing with some at the professional level (Mary-Ann MacKinnon who wrote Steam Train to Mallaig). There are many in the US and Canada too. Check out Ann Grey's Twist of the Tale CD.
Expensive...probably as much as any other hobby you really get in to. Take lessons with a local band and join up with them. Some will kit you after you qualify and that helps hold down expenses.
And ...you won't be wearing a 'skirt'. It's a kilt and it's a man's garment. Pipebands were comprised of men only up to about fifty years ago. When women began playing with bands, they began to wear the kilt. Traditiionally women would wear a long dress, but it wouldn't be suitable for band playing.

I had a friend who was in the band at a high school in El Paso, Texas and their mascot was the Highlanders. They had a bagpipe band and she was quite good at it. I thought it was weird for anyone to play the bagpipes because I find the sound really annoying, but hey. . . .to each his own.

Absolutely. And the only weird thing about it is that guys wear skirts too! *VBG* No, seriously, as a musician myself, I give you a definite yes. It's like girls who play the saxophone. Do you know why the man/woman player ratio is so low? Two words: Lung capacity. You gotta be willing to work at it.
