How did the movie manage to become the best selling movie, ever, and manage to get such a big lead ahead of the second (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) and third (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest) best selling movies ever?

It's not so difficult to see why the film 'Titanic' was so successful.
Take a true historical event, and turn it a movie (the last one was flimed in 1958, time for an update). Use the actor Leonardo DiCaprio, at the height of his popularity, a real "heartthrob" for the younger females. Spend a very large budget, and give the people what they want! For those (like myself) who wanted to see the ship sink, show real-time sinking. For females, throw in a tragic romance, complete with a tearjerker song sung by Celine Dion - and PRESTO! success, beyond your wildest dreams!!

There's actually a formula for making a successful movie besides good script, high production values etc. The story has to have a protagonist (bad guy), a hero and or heroin (good guys), a love story helps, comedy, drama and exciting action, Titanic had it all, and because James Cameron is so good with high action and an involving love story, he made a winner.

well, there are many answers, for one thing: it was a true story so people seem to be more interested in that cause people know that LOTR and POTC are fake stories even though they are great stories. it is apart of u.s. history in a way since they were coming to NY. plus, many people died.
it was also a GREAT love story that everyone fell in love with and it helps that they have the beautiful Kate Winslet and the very good looking Leonardo DiCaprio. the whole necklace, drawing (the naked one of Rose), sex in the car, the love that wasn't suppose to happen caught everyone.
the effects were great especially for that time (when the movie was made). AND the story line was great, it seems alittle fake, a big boat sinking (like the Poseidon) but, its a TRUE story!!!!!
it was a great movie, loved it, one of my fav!!!!

Have you seen the production of the titanic? they built the ship as big and as classic as the real titanic. It was so huge. It is the highest production movie ever made. But not only the production, the story is good too. The lead actor is Leonardo de Caprio and he made that movie very interesting to watch especiall to the girls.
Some fans love it because of the love story, some because of the history of the titanic.
it's big! It's the most wonderful movie I have ever seen with Schindlers List and Star Wars Trilogy.

We because it's so awesome. Leonardo DiCaprio was really hot for the girls. Kate Winslet was really hot for the guys. They worked great together and the story was great. Perfect plotline. James Cameron was great at directing it. He used so many different tecniques that the whole thing lookeed fantastic. With the support of all the fans, it reached success.

hey i think i worked with you at the fair happy 18th btw! i saw the paper lol anywho titanic was made so popular cos girls liked the sad songs and the gorgeous man and the men liked kate winslet naked lol the ending and the whole tragedy thing plus the biggest of all this actually happened in 1900's time so ppl like sadly to watch things where ppl die which is why saving privaate ryan and shindlers list are soooo popular too!!!! lol xx

Cameron's work on Titanic herself looked great....just a shame he couldn't afford to hire actors after the money spent on the ship.
Good enough to watch once on the big screen, and maybe now and then when it hits the idiot box, I wouldn't fork out to buy it though.

it was based on a true store in 1912 andit was leonardo dicaprio and kate winslet, it was a sad movie and girls love sad songsin the had a crush on leonardo dicario, and the guys loved kate winlet and it was an actthion movie also the movie won 11 academy awards in cludding best picture and best movie of the year.the move money it racks up the best chance to be the best movie, of the year.

People love movies about disasters....especially about ones that have already occurred in actual history.
Oh yeah, and it had Leo in it. He was a big heart throb at the time.
I think Jack Sparrow......sorry, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow is a million times hotter though....but that's just my opinion. :)
