I never had this problem, but i also don't do the dishes in my house. My husband does the dishes that don't go into the dishwasher. I know he caramelizes pork chops many times. I would think that he just uses very hot water and soap. My guess would be to boil water in the pot and the sugar will melt and then just dump it out. Make sure that you don't run out of water while boiling, otherwise you'll just end up with the sugar stuck even more.

Yuck, I don't envy you! I had to do this last year after Thanksgiving and it was a pain in the butt. All I did was squirt some dish soap into the pot/dish and then let it fill with hot water to the top. Let it soak for 24 solid hours.

I took the extra step of dumping out the water after 12 hours and replacing it with more hot water. After the 24 hours, I then placed in the dishwasher and it came out perfectly clean and spotless!

Good luck!
