The starter relay broke on my bronco, do i really need it or can i hook the wire from the starter directly to the battery?

you need to replace the starter relay. hooking it directly to the battery is a bad idea. this is a ground lope system and hooking it to power will fry the wire and possibly the vehicle. so replace the starter soleniod. its what makes the thing work correctley.

Yeah sure you can do this but how are you going to turn off the engine? It's not a hard part to replace and actually you could probably repair yourself easily. First find the relay, next open it up, then look for any obvious solder joints that are or have cracks, if you see any solder them back up, plug relay back in and try starting.

You need it. Hooked up directly, the starter will run all of the time.

It's only a few dollars, maybe ten bucks at the worst, couple of bolts to take off and two wire connections...

You can do DIY, it's really easy.
