I have a 92 Olds Cutlass and noticed that when I get to 50-60 mph it seems to start slipping. I pulled the tranny stick and it smells fine but looks dirty should I spend the money and buy a new filter and gasket kit and drop the tranny pan on it or just take it to a shop and have it looked at? I am mechanically inclined and would rather do the work myself but I'm not sure this will fix it. When your transmission is going bad do all gears slip or not? Thanks for the help!

I think I will drop the pan and check for flakes and see what I find. I don't think @ 225,000 miles I will put the money in to rebuild it. Thanks for the advice!

this sounds like your having problems when it goes into the overdrive range about the time the lock up engages. normally not all gears will go out if the transmission is starting to act up. sometimes they will though. its kinda hit and miss. all depends on what clutch pack is going out. being mecanically inclined helps in this instance. first thing to due if your up to it is get it in the air on some jack stands and drop the pan, look for clutch material deposits in the pan or metal flakes. if none are present go ahead with a fluid and filter change to see if it helps. if it doesn't help suspect a converter clutch solenoid or throttle valve linkage problem. also see if you have a vacumm operated module on the transmission. if so see if it is hooked up and working. if you do have deposits of clutch metal flakes, its rebuild time.

If it looks dirty it most likely doesn't smell as fine as you think...

No offense, but it takes a nose for that kind of stuff, the scent of burnt trans fluid isn't nearly as obvious as burnt toast, for instance.

Go ahead and change fluid and filter, it's supposed to be done every 10k miles... Might be something to start with your next one, but hopefully this fixes it for now.

As for flakes, that could mean anything...
Of course it's not good, but all of them develop this over time, you won't really know for sure until you drive it some more.
Make sure thou, you clean out the pan real good, I usually use a rag soaked with a little gasoline or whatever, but really clean it.
Then if it still does it, yeah, I'd take it to a trans shop for a look-see asap.
