Say if you know people that you think are stuck in a rut, to what degree can you tell them what to do with their lives? Surely they have to find their own path?

The extent to which you can guide a friend in life depends much on his/her openness to understand what you are communicating, ability to put into action what has been understood, and turn back to you for more help. The point is to build up a stronger relationship. When there is genuine relationship a friend is able to vibrate with you.

It depends what kind of rut they are in. I dont think it is a good idea for you to get them both and sit them down and give them a good talking to. I think if they turn to you then you can help. The thing is when you are friends with both parties of a relationship you might find your split between the devil and the deep blue sea. What advice you give the other could compromise or go against the other person.People sometimes need to know that there is another option and that the rut can be eased or end but its difficult to give advice when you could end up piggy in the middle.
Its hard to watch from the side lines when you know they need help. I think if there is a time for you to step in then you will know when that is.
So in answer to your question let them travel their own path for the time being.

Surely you can't tell someone how to run their life but you can be a friend when they need you to be. Give them a shoulder to cry on or lend an ear. You can give them advice but chances are they won't take it. They have to be willing to make changes on there own.

It's sorta like the saying "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink".

Just be a friend and eventually your friend will want to dig out of the rut that they have put themselves in.

I dont help my every friend but I have 1 best friend and if she is in a problem I can go to any extent to help her out but I demand only 1 thing that she should be there for me when I need her, I dont want her to go out of the way and help me, I dont expect that from her but I want her to come atleast to the limit of helping me.

Show them the path..... If they lack direction, show them that with confidence, concentration and faith direction will come to them. If they have no motivation show them what they can do when motivated will boost their motivation.

It is difficult when you yourself can see all your paths and how you woulkd like them to go, yet others struggle to find a path and stick to it. Show them they can do it, you'll inspire them
