My kids know how to erase the history of websites visited on the computer. Is there a way to retrieve those files to monitor what sites they are visiting?

Nope, Its gone forever.

I suggest you get a one of those family internet trakker/filters, and make sure the one you get requires a password so that your can't mess around with it.

If someone cleans the IE history using the IE tools option then yes the information is still stored on the computer in index.dat files. Even after clearing your browser history, emptying your cache and deleting your cookies from Internet Explorer, there still remains information about where you've been surfing hidden away in these index.dat files. Since index.dat is a system file and is in use from the time windows starts it cannot be deleted in the normal manner. There is software out there that allows you to access and read the index.dat files as well as to clean it out to prevent its use to track your habits. Index Dat Spy (1) claims to be able to access and display the information stored in the index.dat files but I have not used it. SpiderBite (2) is a piece of software that will clean out the index.dat file.

If you have go back on your computer. Norton back up software yes you can go back several days, months or even years and it will have everything there. Now this will go back to how everything was on that computer that specific day and everything after that day will be erased or not in memory. Also if you have windows XP there is system restore, that is where you can go back to an earlier date and will have all the history and favorites and everything back to that specific date.

How to get to system restore:

Go to start
then click on all programs
then click on accessories
then click system tools
then click on system restore
then type in the date you want to restore.

Any changes system restore makes to you computer are completely reversible.
