Regular glue needs to contact air to harden. Actually glue will stick to the inside of the bottle if the bottle is cracked or left open. Other glues, like epoxy, will only harden when their parts are mixed together.

the closed bottle prevents air from going into the bottle, which prevents the glue from drying

glue need to dry to harden .. why dont you leave a bottle of glue open for a few days.. the top surface wud have hardened..
