I need help deciding on a topic for a paper that needs to be around 8 pages. The instructer is incredibly vague, the paper can pretty much be about anything. It's not specifically an argument or persuasive paper, but if the topic is slightly controversial that is helpful. I really don't want it to be on something that everyone writes about like abortion or gay marriage. Any ideas? Thanks!

OK, I can't resist....

Write a paper about PAPER, perhaps with the title "Eight Sheets of Paper, a Personal Exploration".

Draw up your outline to include such topics as, in no particular order here:

History of Paper Making
Modern Paper Manufacturing
Economic Impact of Paper
Environmental Impact of Paper
Societal Impact of Paper
Types and Uses of Paper
The "Paperless" Society
Technological Breakthroughs
What's in the Future?
etc...

There is a wealth of information available on the Net, and you should have no problem with finding controversy on this subject.

Please note that I'm getting very picky about WHO I answer these days, so I checked out your profile and history and I believe that I noticed that you have some stress in your life. So.....

HAVE SOME FUN with this assignment! Keep it simple and interesting (to YOU)! You won't often get to pick your assignments in life. Enjoy them when you can!

Good Luck and Bless You!!!

It's very frustrating when it's so vague. Does everyone really write about gay marriage and abortion? Huh. How about writing a paper on the forms of unprotected speech as defined in the legal community (like shouting "Fire!" in a crowded building when there is no fire, or 'fighting words' or true threats)?

The 411 on eating disorders - Being Obese
You could cover a lot of knowledge on this and write it from any point of view, or type of paper. Why it's a big deal, how one becomes this way, and how the economy affects the disorder. These are a few questions you could cover.

Are medical breakthroughs/technology helping or harming the Earth?

Mother Nature creates disease and natural disasters as a way to keep the earths' populations in check, however, our creation of cures and vaccines has altered this, and has led to drastic overpopulation of the human species. In turn, this is also leading to the extinction of many of the earths animal species.

What can be done to correct this imbalance?

This is a classic case of catch 22.
