open source code is a program written by programmers where they give you access to the code, to be able to change it however you want to. Linux/Unix OS are often open source code.

Principals of free redistribution, access to source code, allowing for modification, no licensing that discriminates, less restriction. It applies to various products and resources (especially pertaining to computer software). It is to be made available to the general public with either relaxed or non-existent intellectual property restrictions. This allows users to create user-generated software content through either incremental individual effort, or collaboration. Operating systems like Linux follow these guidelines.

From wikipedia:
"Open-source software is an antonym for closed source software and refers to any computer software whose source code is available under a license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that permits users to study, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form."
