From a medical standpoint I would have to say it depends on how old you are. The older you get the lower the melatonin hormone is produced which is what makes you sleepy so the less sleep your body wants however if you are not getting at least 6-8 hrs a night then you could be in need of some supplements because you can actually have an impaired immune system and be susciptible to a lot of colds and flu bugs if you do not get enough sleep. Probably the most boring answer I have given.

if you sleep 8 hours every night (which is normal) you will have spent one third of your life asleep! So imagine if you never had to sleep that would be like living an extra 25 years (assuming average lifespan of 75)! Many people get by on just 4 hours nightly which is like living an extra decade! But feeling rested especially after a stressful day or a long workout (or a night of heavy partying) can mean sleeping up to 9 or 10 hours...

I know everyone recommends that you get eight hours a night, blah blah blah.
But I'm here to tell you that I know plenty of people who operate quite well on two-three hours of sleep a night, and have been doing this for years.
However, it works for these people because their bodies are accustomed to it. I sleep eight or nine hours a night, and if I go even a single night with only two hours of sleep, my body feels it big time the next day.
So my answer is: get as much sleep as your body is adjusted to. When you start messing around with things, your body feels it and you get sleepy, etc. If you do want to change your sleeping habits (because of schedules, etc.) then do it gradually.
