There are many, many temptations in college-- especially if you're away from home. It is possible to screw up for 90 days before the consequences start to emerge (failing grades/eviction from dorm or apartment).

Briefly, you will be faced with the temptation to drink, get high, pull pranks, and sleep through all your classes.

You will have plenty of youthful energy to squander on questionable relationships and ill-advised behavior.

How do you resist? Find a group of students whose parents couldn't afford to go to college. Hang out with kids who are paying their own way. They will have a perspective that many of their less mature "peers" lack.

Man, I used to hate those uppity kids--- but they had it going on in the long run.

Good luck. Even if you focus on your studies, you can still have a great time!

Lots of good answers already but there's another that almost everyone has to manage. Food.

If you live in the dorms and you are eating in the cafeteria and also going out with friends, or ordering pizza and chowing on late night study snacks, the "freshman fifteen" isn't a myth.

For many students, even those with generally good eating habits, the easy access to choice and the erratic hours and the "group think" pressure from friends makes it very easy to put on the pounds. Anticipate that and be prepared to make conscious choices to manage it.

I think the number one temptation is partying, and I am going to try hard to prevent myself from partying this fall. I'm just hoping that if I just focus on the reason I'm in college, it'll help.

partying and not bothering with classes b/c there are no attendance policies. it was hard on my friends, b/c about about 1,000 of us freshman didn't have to pay a cent for college (maybe double that but i never talked to a single person who's family had to pay) and therefore lots spent the days hanging out and the nights partying it up. as students we just have to remember why we're here and learn about moderation and good judgment..
