I have heard of this happening and all I can say is this is the best mistake somebody could make. You still have your baby!
You definitely want to be as healthy as you can, but plenty of people have healthy babies even though they are completely unhealthy during the pregnancies. So don't worry about what you've already done, just do your best from now on out.
As far as your doctor, it is not to late to change. I know people who decided to get a new OB just weeks before giving birth! If it is really not an option, perhaps you could talk to your doctor about his experience. Everyone makes mistakes, but maybe you would feel better to learn about all the good he has done with other patients. I bet you could even talk to someone who has used him recently.

I know what you mean! When i was five weeks and two days pregnant, i started bleeding and having cramps. I went strait to the ER where i was told that i was having a miscarriage and that there was nothing that could be done. They did a transvaginal ultrasound, and i was told that they could not see that gestational sac, so i must have already lost the baby. The ultrasoulnd tech also notoed that i have a retroverted uterus, which is a uterus which tilts backwards, while most womens tilt forwards. Anyways, i was heartbroken, but i went home and got back to my old pre-pregnancy routines: smoking, occasionall drinking, ect. I was still haveing normal periods. Months past and i started having back pain, which i had never suffered from before. I went back to my doctor, who told me that i must have pulled a muscle. Well, after another visist to another doctor, i found out that i was actually 22 weeks pregnant and that i had never had a miscarrige after all. Because of my retroverted uterus, the ultrasound tech had been unable to see the gestational sac, and assumed that i had miscarried. I was worried about the drinking and smoking that i did, but it turns out that i have a healthy little baby in there. I just had my first really firm kick this afternoon. I looked down and say my belly jump about five times in a row!

It was wrong of your doctor to do that. He should of have told you there was a chance but not to act any different. If you have caused any harm to your baby its time to stop now. You should never have started smoking until after you were sure. Speak with your doctor. Let him know what happened and how you feel. Maybe you can help keep this from happening to someone else.

be healthy now
once you have a healthy baby, sue him
he had no right to tell you that you were going to lose your baby
some doctor's don't have any "bedside manner" but it doesn't excuse some of the things they say or do
I had a doctor inform me AFTER I gave birth to perfectly healthy twins, that I have a heart murmur. There were two kinds, and I must not have the bad kind, because if I did I wouldn't have been allowed to have twins. Why say that? But he didn't stop there. He went on to tell me that IF I'd had the bad kind they would have done a selective reduction. (WHAT THE........? I mean why say that to the mother of HEALTHY BABIES?) I informed him there would have been NO reduction. He then goes on to tell me that IF I'd had the other kind of heart murmur, and refused to kill one of my babies that I would have died. I look the man straight in the face and told him...."Then I'd be dead." He rolled his eyes and changed the subject. Why even bring it up? My twins were two months old! No one wants to hear that you're lucky they didn't kill one of them off to give you a better chance! I wanted to kick him after that, he should have known better. (I'll never go see him again, ever.)

your doctor was just telling you what he was seeing you are just lucky that your baby pulled through. have alittle more faith in doctors. as long as they have the right credentials you should trust them. i think you don't know what your doing, of course not eating and smoking heavily will cause harm to the baby. you should be taking more care. its not just about you anymore.
