Then finished shopping an purchased the other things at the front of the store.at this point,I wrote my check, the lady looked at it,looked at me, then said I cant take the check! I said why is that? she said the names dont match. I say thats funny I just wrote a check in the back with no problem, wuts the deal now? long story short, they made my husband and I stand there a good 20 minutes or so,calling the check in and god knows. to later say it ok! my I.d. had my maiden name, and my checks have my marriage name,"ramirez' you do the math.so i got da stuff out of spite!

I did it on purpose but for a purpose. Bescause all people arent criminals and its really sad to say that all the stereo typing,racism,B.S. still exist! I personally felt like they didn't deserve my money after going through all of that. So Yea I didn't have to purchase it,But if you think about it, they didn't think I could actually pay for it! anyways. And I didn't wanna give them the satifaction.....

It's not a crime to stop a check and the bank will usually charge $30-$40 for doing so. If you're writing it to a company they may also charge you for a returned check.

Popular reasons for stopping payment on a check- you realized you mis-wrote it, the person you wrote it to tells you they lost it and either needs a new one or you don't want it floating around wherever, you sent one to pay a bill but to the wrong company. It's all legal and you just have to call the bank.

Now for example, if you took your car to the mechanic, paid 1000k by check and then cancelled it because you only want to pay 30 bucks, that's illegal and they'll see ya in court. That goes for any comparable situation.

Usually it is a crime. There are a few exceptions. Let's say you bought a box of antique collectibles. The owner boxed your purchase for you and you wrote a check. When you got home you found that he filled the box with empty beer cans. You called to complain and he laughed and said there's a sucker born every minute.

In this case you can stop payment because you have a valid dispute. Let him swear out a warrant and you can argue it in front of a judge.

If I write a check, and make a mistake, and tear it up, I can stop payment just to make sure someone doesn't try to tape it together and cash it.

BUT if you are stopping payment on the check with the intention of defrauding an individual it is techically a crime, and punishable as a criminal offense.

No its not a crime--imagine u wrote out a cheque -and signed in and forgot to fill out the TO: name or a payee acc name--then ur a goner--and anyone can encash it--only disadvantage wud b that u wud be charged a lil amount for it-and if u wanna b extra careful--when u make the stop payment--just rber to inform your friends to whom u may have given a prior cheque and ask them not to encash it just yet--ask them to wait while u resolve ur prob and then ask them to go ahead--btw--after the probs taken care of--remind ur bank to activate ur account as before--so that they can issue cheques to whoever u need to give-

If you do it to rip someone off then yes. If your mechanic says he fixed your car and you wrote a check to pay him then your car breaks down before you get home, the the answer is no.

its against the law, especially if youve received the goods already. if you havent, then you can probably cancel the purchase. if youve received them and youve sent the check out and it bounces, they can sue you. if you never sent the check in the first place, i think the worst they can do is reclaim the goods from you, and call your phone for a payment at ungodly hours. good luck :)
