The reason the rivalry between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels is the best ever is because that rivalry had it all. At first Bret dominated the rivalry (in total he has more wins over Shawn than Shawn has over him), then during the middle Shawn took over the rivalry, and by the end it was pretty much even. Even more so was their simularities and their differences. Their simularities are that they are both Ring Generals (which means they know where they are at all times in the ring), they have both proved that can go through extended periods of length in a match and still be able to preform tremendously (wrestlers like Roidtista would collaspe after the 10 minute mark if he was in an Iron Man Match), they are basically the same height, and they are both all around great preformers. Their differences are that while Bret is the all around better wrestler, Shawn is the better athlete, as well as their approaches to a match and in a match.

Another thing that set this rivalry apart from others is the fact that Bret Hart and Michael Hickenbottom (Shawn Michaels) actually hate each other, I mean really hate each other alot, and you don't see that kind of aggression to an opponent in rivalries today or in the past. That is why Bret "The Hitman" Hart-vs.-"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels is the greatest rivalry in pro wrestling ever.
Runners up:
1. "The Canadien Crippler" Chris Benoit-vs.-"The Olympic Hero" Kurt Angle
2. Sting-vs.-Ric Flair
3. Bret Hart-vs.-Steve Austin
4. The Rock-vs.-Steve Austin
5. Triple H-vs.-Mick Foley

Yeah, I was going to pick Benoit-vs.-Guerrero, but I went with Benoit-vs.-Angle. Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero had great matches from their early days as The Pegasis Kid (Benoit) and Black Tiger (Guerrero) to their final match in the WWE. Truly a great rivalry and one of my favorites.

Shawn vs Bret is a great one but since we are arguing who was Benoit's best rivalry in here everyone is forgetting something. Its not Angle and its not Eddie. he actually liked those guys.
For the same reason as Hart vs HBK is a great rivalry because of actual real life heat, Benoit's greatest rivalry was against Kevin Sullivan. They had some truly brutal matches back in the WCW.
Benoit vs Sullivan was a real life rivalry. Benoit at this time was in the Four Horsemen and Sullivan was the leader of the Dungeon of Doom. But what made this hot was that Benoit was dating Sullivan's wife (his real wife) going by the ring name of Woman. Matter of fact Benoit is now married to her. Did anyone ever see the falls count anywhere match which was the culmination of the feud? They went into a bathroom and Sullivan rammed Benoit's head it to a porcelain stand up Johnny! It was full contact and brutal. Benoit won as I recall.
To me even though Hart vs HBK is much more well know feud, Benoit vs. Sullivan might just surpass it as far as brutality goes!

Bret VS HBK was good, but the best had to be Ric Flair VS Ricky Steamboat.
These guys took it all over the world, and other promotions. In fact, nearly every match was a classic and stole the show. Unlike the HBK Hart matches. These guys did not need any gimmck matches other than one 2 out of 3 falls.
1989 Match of the Year (vs. Ric Flair)
5 Star Match: vs. Ric Flair (February 20, 1989)
5 Star Match: vs. Ric Flair (April 2, 1989)
5 Star Match: vs. Ric Flair (May 7, 1989)
Benoit's best feud was against Eddie, not Angle. Again it was from several promotions and several Countries. Even though the first bout was when Eddie was under a mask and Benoit was known as the Pegasis Kid.

The Rock vs Stone Cold, hands down.
They've put on some of the best matches, and have even come out and cut great promos against each other.

The best matches I should think would be the ones that Ric Flair had with Steamboat. And then, Vader's matches with Cactus Jack were good, and really brutal.

I gotta go with Raven vs Tommy Dreamer cause Tommy could never get the upper hand and Ravens last match in ECW before he jumped to WCW, He won. A great story in that feud

It would have to be Flair vs. Steamboat. The Chi-Town Rumble of 1989 had to be one of the greatest matches ever!
