For outright speed and power the PS3 wins. There are issues though.
It's speed advantage is the result of 8 customised CPU units that work together (the so called cell engine). Because the units are custom the software to program them is also specialist and apparently quite buggy. The x-box 360 only has 3 chips, but they are stock CPU's and as a result can be programmed using Visual Basic. VB is tried and tested and bugs generally occur due to bad operater programming and not the software.
Where the 360 does claw some ground back is in the graphics card & memory areas. It has a better card then the PS2, and microsoft have created a new way of rendering background layers that is much faster then normal. The memory in the 360 is better quality and writes/reads quicker. To employ a similar tactic on the PS3 would cost Sony and game developers a lot of money. Many people suggest that most PS3 games won't run in HD..
The 360 has had time to establish itself, and as a result microsoft have now started reducing the price of the console and games. When PS3 hits it will be too expensive and under supported

I'm from Germany, too. And the following got me thinking:
The PS3 in the US costs $599. Here in Germany it will cost €599. This will mean over $700 if you convert it again.
Furthermore: American and Japanese PS3s have the chips of the PS2 built right in. So they can play about 98% of the old PS2 games without problems.
The European PS3 will *not* have this chip. It will emulate the old PS2 like the Xbox 360 does with the Xbox games.
So us Germans get an inferior product for a higher price tag.
To cut it short:
PS3 and Xbox 360 graphics are the same (check the link below for comparison shots between games on the 360 and PS3).
PS3 has fewer software titles. Many developers make PS3 games also for the Xbox 360 or cancel PS3 alltogether because of the poor sales.
The PS3 has no rumble support, and if you fancy the motion controller, get a Wii.
The Live-online part for the 360 is free as long as you don't want to play against other players. You can still manage your buddy lists, write messages or talk to them with a free Silver Membership.
The paid Live Gold-Membership is well worth the money. The Live system is a standard throughout all Xbox 360 games. On PS3 all game companies can (and probably will) write their own multiplayer service.
On the Xbox its like this:
You play the Game XYZ. Now the Xbox tells you with a small sign, that your buddy "CoolMcGamer" went online. While playing you can open the Dashboard and check what game he is playing. Lets say he's playing ABC and you want to play with him.
So you know what game to take from the shelf and you can join right into the match with him.
On the PS3 you play XYZ and you will only see online players of XYZ.
Then the BlueRay thing. The format War between BlueRay and HD DVD is a tough one and shops hate to have movies occupy twice the space (one for HD DVD and one for BlueRay).
Just in case HD DVD wins, you can put the PS3 right next to the Betamax VCR in the cellar or use it as a nice doorstop.
If the BlueRay wins, Microsoft can (and probably will) produce a Blue Ray add on Drive. And if you really don't care about High Definition Movies, well then you have saved your money for either drives on the Xbox.
On the PS3 you *have* to buy the BlueRay price.
And finally regarding crazy man's statement about 1080p.
Only a handful of TV's support 1080p. Even fewer are in the peoples homes. So there is not much incentive for a game maker to pay extra for making a game 1080p.
Furthermore, 1080p is limited to 30 frames per second. So a fast paced shooter will not be as playable as a game running with 60 frames per second.
However, Microsoft has recently updated the Xbox through a free online update, so the Xbox can now display 1080p, too.
A coming Tennis game by SEGA will use the 1080p output on the Xbox 360.
So all in all: Save your money and get an Xbox 360...

I was in the exact same position as you unitl 1 hour ago when i became an owner of an Xbox360.
My reason was based on the following:
PS3:
Blu-ray - Needs to evolve
Games - Needs to evolve
HD - Just becoming the Standard
Online Gaming - Needs to evolve
Xbox360
HD-DVD - Needs to evolve but doesnt have to be bought with console
Games - Large choice of games
HD - Just becoming the standard
Online Gaming - Large player base set up.
I will buy the ps3 when the world & developers have caught up with the technology. By that time, i will get more out of the console and it will be cheaper.

It's a matter of opinion usually. The 360 is usually considered to have better games, a better graphics unit and easier to code for, while the PS3 has Blu-Ray (while 360 can get HD) and a better processing unit, but it's hard to program for apparently. Overall people like the 360 more.

Regarding what Shaz a has written, by the time the developers have worked out what the hell their doing with the ps3 a new console will be coming out from microsoft or nintendo. And as for xbox 360 launch titles how can you beat Oblivion which came out around the launch which is still played by loads of people a year on and is now in budget price range. Also the brilliant Project Gotham 3.
And as for games to come this year you are looking at Halo 3, Alan Wake, Mass Effect, Obilvian add on, Clive Barker's Jericho (king of horror) assasins creed, halo wars, Star wars, bioshock, fable 2, huxley (compete online with pc owners difenately xbox only.) to name but a few. the list goes on.
It is easy for the developers nows to program vast games with 360 but will take another year or 5 for sony to catch up. I hate to say it but PS3 has left it to late and made things too complicated for themselves. 360 win hd gaming, Nintendo win for innovation. Sony?????

fair enough, the 360 only has 1080i ouput where the PS3 has 1080p output, p is better because the picture is slighlty crisper, but microsoft are upgrading the machines that they are putting out this year with 1080p graphics, which means the only diiference is 360has better processors and PS3 has bigger harddrive, but thena again, xbox live now allows you to download films and watch TV (in the future), which garuntees that microsoft will release the 80gig hard drive for sure! so, go 360!!!!!!!!!! 360 also looks nicer

The console's are only as good as the games produced for it. If you see the line of games for the PS3 and think that you would be interested then go for the PS3, or vice versa with the Xbox 360.

i am sorry...but i am going to have to disagree with nearly everyone here...i think that the playstation 3 will have the better gaming....in the future...if u have some patience...with its awesome power....when IBM have taught game developers how to get the most out of the cell...gaming will be taken onto a whole new level....the blu ray space will support this aswell....and if u compare xbox 360 launch games to playstaion 3 games...playstation 3 games totaly kill them....and if u compare the ps3 games to the latest xbox 360 games...it also strides along with it...(except gears of war which has brilliant graphics),,,i know the xbox 360 has more games available for it...thats just because it has been out for a longer time...if you give the playstation 3 time...it will overcom the xbox360...im not taking it away from microsoft...there latest gaming console is a huge success...but sony will out do them...like every other time....
ooo..plus....the xbox 360 controllers are like weights...they are tooo heavy...the playstation 3 controllers are sooo much lighter and are just friendlier to use...
but this is in my opinion...your entitled to ure own
hope this helps!
ps...if you do go with the playstation 3...buy resistance fall of man as it has been reviewed as one of the best launch game of the gaming history.....

It is not the system performance that makes a game system great but the games that are made for the system. Right now, the 360 has a greater range of great games. But if you want performance, go with the PS3.
