Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, is a terrific, blood-and-thunder kind of romance/horror novel, which was inspired not by an actual person, but by the gigantic, mazelike Paris Opera House. The Phantom in the novel is depicted as an aging, insane genius, hideous since birth, who actually helped build the Opera House, and filled it with trapdoors and secrets. The plots of both the novel and the musical & recent film are all similar, but the musical & movie play down the Phantom's more monstrous aspects and menace.
I've always preferred the novel, for its period setting and old-fashioned story-telling--a fantastic tale, and heartbreaking at the same time!

In my opinion, the book is marvelous. I love the musical as well, no denying it, but I absolutely love the novel. In fact, The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite book. I can't really tell you too many differences without giving away the plot, but to me, the musical makes Christine more of a child, and she falls in love with two men, while in the novel, it is Raoul whom she loves, and really, Raoul alone, but she pities Erik, and there is love in that pity. The musical is more of a love triangle, while the book is the innocent love between two youths and the tragic, ill-fated obsession of an insane genious. Oh, and one of the major differences is the presence of the Persian in the novel. I love him, and I hated that Webber left him out of the musical. He plays a large role in the novel. The novel is brilliant, and if you haven't read it, then you should, although the musical is fantastic as well, and if you can see it, you should.

If you want a story then the movie is better in my opinion. The book is more like a historical account of the events rather than a novel or story. In the book the phantom has a different, more detailed past and Christine seemed dumber/more helpless to me. Also, the ending is a bit more detailed and I think Madame Gire was more like a maid than the ballet instructor. Hope that helps!
