The point of the story is that his 'true sin' is not believing in the power of God to save him. It means that faith is more important than actions when it comes to salvation. Because faith is required to achieve salvation and he did not have faith, it is not a question of being 'worthy' of damnation or forgiveness, but rather what is the rational outcome of lacking what is required for a particular effect.
