I'm no astronomer but I'm sure they could guess that the moon did not have life supporting features that earth has like an atmosphere which protects the earth from many metorites and such. The moon is an open target to get pelted with.

on a clear night you can see the craters on the moon from earth with the naked eye.

craters = shadows on the surface that can be seen even by the unaided eye
