I used to, and I loved it. I lived in the Lake Merritt area. People are so afraid of Oakland, but that's okay because it keeps the rents down. There are some really beautiful neighborhoods with old Victorian homes. I'd easily live there again.

About 400,000 people, 142k black, 125k white, 87k Hispanic, 60k Asian, 3k Native American, 2k Pacific islanders and the rest are 'others' (whatever that means). East and west Oakland are significantly dangerous, sorry if that's a problem for anyone, but with 148 murders and 29,600 serious crimes last year that's just the way it is. The business district is OK during the day but a bit questionable at night, they have some nice hotels there but you wouldn't want to be on the bottom end of Broadway (between 8th and 20th) at night. Chinatown is pretty safe and the area from there through to Lake Merritt isn't too bad, but past Park Blvd things start going down hill fast. Same thing west of I980 in the triangle between I980, I580 and I880.

I live in Alameda, we still have the police force that was required to keep the USN quiet on shore leave but they are long gone, so despite being a bridge or tunnel away from Oakland we have relatively little crime, usually no murders per year, which is quite a contrast considering we are separated by 300' of water.

I live in San Leandro. It borders Oakland to the south. I've been through Oakland a few times and it's not as bad as what people think. The north Oakland area is cool -- kind of a hip extension of Berkeley.

Not me, but my brother works there, so I'm around there a lot. I actually live in Walnut Creek, CA.
