Although I am an adult I read a book that my three children read and I thought it was marvelous. It's Visitors by Bob Chapman, it's on Amazon

If you're after young adult, the Bartimeus trilogy is extremely enjoyable. It's fun because of the attitude of the djin, etc.
Another recommendation would be Artimis Fowl.
Both of the above are fun to read, partially because of the attitude of the author. There are many laughs due to the attitude of the characters, etc., and the writing style of the author, as well as a great deal of suspense. I can't put those books down when I read them.
Pendragon was also a good series, though I'd recommend the other two first.
If you're a Harry Potter fan, I would say Charlie Bone is similar. Harry Potter is good, but I've found there are as many good books out there (or in my view even better ones) which haven't gotten as much hype.
If you're after picture books, I've always loved ones which kindof have an emotional connection. For instance, the "You are Special" book was great. Also, when I was young I was afraid of the dark, so I really liked one about a mouse who was afraid of the dark, too. That book was called "Adventure in the Dark." There was also one about a monster who was afraid that a child was in the closet, which I enjoyed, too. I don't remember the name of that one. For Valentines Day, I loved the "Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch."
Well, that's a list which should get you started. Of those, Bartimeus is my favorite! There are many, many good children's books out there, though.

Pollyanna, Anne of Green Gables, The Five Little Peppers, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Trixie Belden series, Nancy Drew Series, Beverley Cleary books, Gordon Korman books, the Fudge series(can't think of the author), there is another series but I can't think of the name of them about an English girl who is sent to boarding school and decides she is going to be as bad as she can be so she will get sent home again....but the school has a council of students that deal with rewarding and punishing the students......there are a few books in the series how she goes from the baddest girl in the school to the most popular.

for younger kids Robert Munsch books are great, Goodnight Moon, I'll love you for always,

There are too many. I always enjoyed the classic stories like: Little Red Robinhood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Cat In The Hat, and for a little older kids, I loved reading the Anne Of Green Gables series.

the first book i read when i was a kid was 'secret garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett. its still my favorite one even though i ve read thousands since then! its about a little girl, living in a huge castle and discovering an old, abandonned garden. the description is so vivid that you feel like you are in that garden with that girl! the dead trees, the wild nature growing after many years of not caring about the place...its a great story.

I like The Monster At the End of This Book. It is a little golden book about Grover. I also love Everything by Dr. Seuss.

I also like Wind in the Willows, and Chron of Narnia...but in all fairness, I read these as an adult, not a child.

"'I Can't,' Said The Ant" by Polly ?
"Duck And His Friends" by K. and B. Jackson

"If I Ran The Circus"
"The Lorax"
"Happy Birthday To You" by Dr. Seus

There was another one with a small dragon that gets injured and hides in a log Newburry or Caldicot Award winner. I also liked the "Billy And Blaze" and "Encyclopedia Brown" books.

For the 12 and up crowd, I reccomend "The Snark-Out Boys And The Bacconburg Horror" by Daniel Pinkwater.
