The lock is stuck in the open position. The knob will turn most of the way but the bolt does not slide with the knob. I don't have the key. I tried wd-40. Any ideas?

First off, deadbolts do not have knobs. Either you have a deadbolt, and one or more sides has a beveled face with a keyhole, or you have a spring bolt, which is incorporated into a doorknob.

Since I don't know which one it is, I can't be all that helpful. My advice would be to grab a screwdriver. On the inside side of the door, there should be two screws on either side of the knob, or deadbolt. Unscrew those two screws, and you can take the "knobs" off of both sides of the door.

Now take a look at the part that fit between the door. At least one side should have a straight bar-like object in it. Work the key to see if that still turns. (remember to put it back in the "lock' position when you are done) Sometimes on very old, or messed up doors, this bar will become stuck, twisted around, or worn off where it goes into the throw.

Now look at the throw. The throw is that part of the lock mechanism that actually moves the bolt in and out of the door. Often you can use a screwdriver to operate it in the door to make sure it still works. If it doesn't work, there will be two screws on the edge of the door above and below the bolt. Unscrew these, and pull the bolt out to see if anything is gummed up in there.

Most likely, if there's not something stuck in the mechanism somewhere, you've got broken parts, and will probably need to buy a new lock... or at least have a locksmith fix it. A locksmith would cost you less if you have the key. With low quality locks like kwikset, this will be a dollar or two extra without the key. With high grade stuff like schlage, they may have to mail it back to the company, and the extra cost could be as much as a few hundred bucks.

All the same, if you can get it off the door, you save yourself the expense of a service call.

Buy a new one seems like the best choice. Modern deadbolt locks are really easy to install; you can do it yourself. Choose a keyless or keypad deadbolt lock. Schlage offers a range of popular devices to choose from
