i agree with the guy above...
i have seen this on a Fiat pinafirina spider...
the carb on that car I worked on had a sticking needle and seat as well as a sticking float so it was dumping fuel into the intake all the time...hense filling up the crankcase with fuel and thinning out the oil and buring out the bearings eventually....i had to replace the fuel pump and rebuild the carb to get things running again normally....

Had the same thing happen once on a 289 Ford..same motor.
The diaphram had ruputured on the fuel pump, allowing fuel into the crankcase. It's an easy repair. Remember, when you go to put the pump on, LEAN the pump, making the lever point straight down as you begin to put it on the engine. That way, the pump lever is sure to be on the correct side of the eccentric cam that drives the pump. If you do it wrong, the lever will be on the wrong side, and you'll break the lever off of the new pump. Once the lever is in contact with the eccentric, begin hand installing ALL of the pump to block bolts. Tighten them a bit at a time, which will pull the pump up to the block evenly. Trying to do only one at a time is a sure fire way to crack the housing on the new pump.

you can 1 of three possibilities of this. 1 fuel pumps internal seals failed, causing fuel to leak into the crank case. 2 metering rods and jets bad letting too much fuel by pass into the engine 3 excessive ring wear letting fuel bypass rings and enter crank case. with that much fuel in the crank case i would suspect the fuel pump as the culprite. start there and work towards the others if the fuel pump is good.

sounds like you have a bad piston rings, and the rings aren't keeping the gas from passing the piston...
