All art comes from within your heart and soul. If your dance comes from within, then it is art. A sport would be something that people compete in. If you dance and compete, then it becomes a sport.

It is an art, because it is a way of expressing meaning. Sports are about keeping fit and competing.

Now, the Martial Arts, as their name implies, are something that coud be classified as both.
Becasue the figures and moves can be used in combat, can express meaning (communication) and are a means for keeping fit and competing (sports)

Dance is a performing art, and sometimes, a fine art. It is not a sport. (I personally believe that sports must involve at least one of the following: running, swimming, skiing, hitting, a ball or puck, a large "farm" animal, bicycles, race cars, sticks, or bladed skates. Sports are not accomplished in dresses or slacks (unless on bladed skates); and cannot be accomplished in bars, pubs, pool halls, saloons, parlors, card rooms, casinos (unless in a ring or arena at a casino), or bowling alleys. Bathing suit competitions, poker tournaments, Scrabble, spelling bees, skateboarding, Dancing with the Stars, car shows, dog shows, cat shows, archery, and curling I consider to be liesure activities, and not sports.)

It's both. It's an art if we speak about ballet, ethnic dances etc. It is a sport (even a professional one) in which existing ballroom dances (tango, waltz, jive, rumba, charleston, paso doble etc.) are codified so as to make up for exciting and spectacular competitions:There are 2 categories in sports dancing: classical and Latin American, each with 5 dances. I personally would recommend it as an Olympic sport.
