As a Graphics designer, I know Photoshop, Maya, DreamWeaver, Flash, and HTML.
You don't have to worry about the coding side, even if you've to know, you don't have to worry about C/C++. You have to learn ASP.Net or PHP or Java for that.

Useful? Very much so. Essential? That depends on the company you work for and the team you work with. Like any other career, the more you know, the more valuable you are.

.net (dot net) is the latest Microsoft development platform, but it you want to learn Visual Basic, it's not going to hurt.

C++ might be a little too involved for most graphic gurus.

Again, we can't all be experts in every arena, so if graphics are your strong suit, be an expert at that.

As part of a development team, having a basic familiarity with a few languages and development platforms comes in handy, especially when all you need to do is add a quick tweak here or there.

When the time comes for beta testing an application, it's great to be able to pinpoint problems and make useful suggestions toward resolving problems.
