Why? Because our clothing is one thing about our appearance that we CAN control, and HOW we do so sends a message to everyone who sees us. A person's choices reflect aspects of his/her own personality, and when those choices are literally worn on the outside for all to see, then we are broadcasting whatever personal aspect they are indicative of, and others respond to that broadcast.
Our choice of clothes reveals whether we are someone with high self-esteem who cares about presenting an attractive image or someone who is so down on themself that they don't care.
It broadcasts whether one is a mindless crowd-follower, an idiosyncratic individualist, or somewhere in between.
It exposes our levels of creativity, common sense and a host of other personality traits to the rest of the world.
How you dress writes an open book about you and publishes it right there for all to see.
Why should anyone think it is remarkable that others react to this?

as we go through our daily lives there is so much that is going on if we were to consciously assess every thing or person our minds would be so bogged down we wouldn't be able to do anything fortunately our brains are very good at taking care of unconsciously taking in the surroundings for us and deciphering it the unfortunate downside is that this process works a lot with associations and assumptions that aren't always true. The important thing is to recognize this and be wary of our own first impressions and how others will perceive us when it is important to be seen a specific way

I know what you are talking about. If I am dressed up with hair all done and make up on.. I look and act differently..
BUT
If I am working the dogs and have my *grungies* on and go in for a cup of coffee... well, I am usually a bit friendlier.. is it just being in a better mood because I am more relaxed???
Who Knows... LOL... anymore, at my age.. I don't sweat the small stuff.. Glad you found out about it now... better NOW than later.. (smiles)
GOOD LUCK TO YOU

i've had the same experience many times. it and just proves how shallow most people really are to think they can tell who a person is by what they are wearing. i have been in many situations where the clothes i was wearing were very uncomfortable and wrong for my personality, but the situation called for it. people told me i looked nice, but i didn't feel it. then on the other hand, i have been in social situations where i should have probably dressed up a bit for the occasion, but comfort ruled. it's harsh enough to get judged for your race or religion, but your taste in fashion? what's the big deal anyway? these people need to change their priorities.

I think it is conditioning.
I heard a story about this ol guy that went to buy a car and no one would wait on him because of the way he dressed.
It turned out, he went across the street and paid cash.
I know when I dress up to do ordinary errands, I get through the errands much smoother - can I help you? Smiles, No hassles.

There are 2 things that clothes say. What is your level on society (and this is where clothes are important) and style. One level includes many styles I think...so people shouldn't judge you by your style...but by your level on society scale. The ones that realize this are the ones that worth your time.

People make judgments according to what they see. They don't know you so they make assumptions based on your clothes, hairstyle, grooming, posture, etc. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

It's called stereotyping. And as mean as it seems, it's human nature to do so.. well, depending on your intrinsic nature.

Cause people suck and they are judgemental and have nothing better to do. Do what you want to hell with them.
