I don't know whether you are white or black or some where in between, but a book that really should be made a mandatory read in high school is the book "Roots." It is about 900 pages but once you start to read it you won't want to put it down. It is not 100% factual but it is very close and further more it is a story of love of family, culture, history very much the way that it was. I will tell you I am dyslexic and for me to sit and read a book like Roots and enjoy it is really some thing

There is a serie called "The daughters of England". Although one of the books in the serie has this name, it is not the first. Is by Phillipa Carr, who is also Vitoria Holt and Jean Plady.
Take a look at this site. It was one of the most beautiful series I have ever read. Rich in history and she was an amazing writer. Her characters quite human.
