It just seems like my whole life is just a matter of chasing after the dollar. I can't stand it. How do I rise above this?

Brian, you have to get off the "rat wheel" and the first step to do this is to sit down with a pad and pen and list all things you REALLY need in your life-- material things and it has to be the things you absolutely cannot live without---

on the second page--list all the things you have that you don't need and how much they actually cost

on the third page list all the things you want to have the time to do, but can't because you are always working and divide this page in 2, one half has the activities that cost money and an estimate of how much it costs, the second column has the activity and the fact that it costs Nothing!

Then sit back and seriously look at all three pages and decide which page means the most to you and what you are willing to sacrifice to get it.

I am going to guess you will find that you have a lot of material items that cost a lot but mean nothing to you.

That there are a lot of things you want to do in your life but you don't have time to because you're always working and most of the activities cost very little.

And now that you have taken the time to really examine what is important to you, you can make your last list of what is the most important things in your life and how you can attain them...including your eternal happiness.

Kudos to you for realizing this at what I think, is a young age, because you sound young, and you still have time to change and SAVE your life..........

If you can get yourself into a position where you have enough money to live off of that is a good place to start. One way to do this is to get an average paying job. Also, you can go to higher education and get loans (loans are enough to live off of).

What I do is live to serve my community. As long as I have enough money to live off of I am good. In fact I always try to donate money when possible (and I don't make much). I was raised really poor, my mom brought in about 9,000 a year from SSI and Welfare. From my school loans alone I made more than her and loved to be able to live that way, not worry about rent. I don't mind not having much extra.

If you have an attitude that believes money is just a means to an end that is helpful. Give of your money as well, that is helpful.

Also, get some other goal in mind. For example, I do a lot of work to help my community. However corney it sounds, it fills me up in a way money can't. Find something you are passionate about and work with it, when you do you will find money is not so important.

Are you a good writer? I'd start with that. My niece is thinking on doing that to help her parents pay for her high school in two years. I don't know. But I'm sure you'll be a lot richer than me some day. No I'm not poor. I'm just broke.

And don't feel discouraged on this but don't live for money. Earn money to live. As long as you have enough until you die that's great. And when you die they won't bury you'r money with you.

We chase money because we are envious. We think that with money, we can live the way we see others living, we can have what they have, and we can receive the worship that they receive. This is illusion. When we remove envy from our lives, we can see that no person is exempt from the three-fold miseries of life: The miseries we inflict upon ourselves in the form of bad decisions and immoral behavior; the miseries others inflict upon us in the form of physical attack or emotional and psychological distress; and the miseries that nature inflicts upon us in the form of calamity and disease.

When we can remove envy, we become satisfied with our own portion, and we can live very simply without constantly hankering after more, more. Our thinking becomes unpolluted, and we can focus on those things in our lives that are actually important. This is richness.

The main question is: how to overcome ourselves?

If you overcome yourself, you have overcome everything. Money is not the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem is not knowing what to do in life.

Every week give a couple bucks away. Doesn't make any difference who or what you give them to. It will change you and your attitude. When you start acting like you have plenty of money you will have plenty of money!
