The federation of the States that produced the Commonealth of Australia occurred on 1 January 1901. At that time there was no capital city and the first Parliaments sat in Melbourne. The area for the capital city was chosen between Melbourne and Sydney and a lot of very strange names were suggested for it before Canberra was chosen. It was the name of the sheep station that had been there and had taken its name from a local language. The first parliament sat in the temporary Parliament House (which stayed in use for the next 70 years) in 1929.
An area sufficiently large to accommodate an expanding capital was carved out of New South Wales and became the Australian Capital Territory. The city of Canberra was placed in it. The ACT also has a small area with a 20km coastline on Jervis Bay which is a base for the Royal Australian Navy.
As one farmer said after Canberra was declared " A good sheep station spoilt!".

When it was being decided which city should be named the capital of Australia, there was a battle for the title between Sydney and Melbourne. So, in the end, it was decided that a separate state should be created, with its capital becoming the capital city of Australia - the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) was created and Canberra was made the nation's capital...and the rivalries still exist!

The ACT is the Australian Capitol Territory. It is located in NSW, but is classified as a territory of it's own.
