An early results home pregnancy test (like First Response) may be able to tell if she's pregnant 5 days beore her period is due! It is best to use first morning urine for these b/c the HCG hormone (which the tests detect) has time to build up b/c she likely will not have gone to the restroom during the night. Dipping the test into a cup or using it in a stream of urine are both effective methods & as long as you follow the instructions that come with the test one is not more accurate than another. (Be sure to check how long you're supposed to leave the test in b/c the time may vary for the 2 methods.) A blood test at the drs may be able to tell a few days before an early results test. However, if there is a negative result on the early results test but she does not get her period as normal then it may have just been too early to test and in which case you should test again. By 7 days after a missed period any brand of test should give you a definite positive. Best Wishes!

Idealy it is best to test about a week after a missed period and using first urine of the day. BUT this is just by textbook, home pregnancy tests these days can be used on the day your period is due (or some up to 4 days prior to the day period is due) and still be accurate. Also they do state now you can test any time of day also. When I was pregnant I tested later in day & on day period was due & got positive results on both tests. Some women however cant get a positive result to show even though they are pregnant. This is because the level of pregnancy hormone is low & does not show on the test. If you buy a two pack test, take one on the day of the missed period first thing in the morning. If its neg - dont give up hope, if her period still does not show take it again in a few days time. Good luck!

First morning urine is considered to be the best beacuse it holds the most concentrated amount of HCG. You can also achieve this by "holding" urine in for several hours if you want to test during the day or evening. When HCG levels get high enough than you can test at any time of the day. The earliest one can test it usually 5 days before missed persiod with an early home pregnancy test or you can get a blood test from a dr that will be accurate a few days after implantation (about a week after ovualtion) I hope this helps and Good Luck to you and your wife!!

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)
Do I have to test with my first morning urine (FMU)? Not necessarily. In general, FMU is the most concentrated urine of the day and thus more likely to have built up more hCG in it. If you are testing early (before 14 DPO), the HPT is more likely to detect the hCG in your FMU. After 14 DPO there should be enough hCG to be detected at any time of day. Some women have better luck with second morning urine (SMU.) A good rule of thumb: hold your pee for 3-4 hours (and drink as little as possible!) Then pee in a cup. If your urine looks nice and yellow, it's concentrated enough for testing (see FAQ 16 below for more info on peeing in cups vs. peeing on sticks.) If it looks diluted, dump it and try again later.

she can do a test from the first day of her missed period preferably in the morning as the urine will contain the highest pregnancy hormones at this time, even if she gets a negative result the first time she could still be pregnant and should do another test a few days later to check again as the hormones increase every few days

Some of the test really don't matter what time of the day and some test can even detect pregnancy 5 days before you miss your cycle. I say do the clear blue easy digital read out.
