Rather than argue the science, I'd like to understand why the Soviet Union would not expose the fraud. They had much more experience in space at that point in time and would have known about the dangers of the Van Allen belt. Supposedly, the shielding required would have made the capsule too heavy.
I'm assuming the conspiracy theories are correct.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Soviets never landed cosmonauts on the moon. I have no idea if the theories are correct but if it was a hoax it was brilliant. One of those, we will say this, prove us wrong things.
The Soviets sent a probe to the moon. They set a probe in lunar orbit. They sent a capsule with turtles to orbit around the moon. These things may or may not be true but the American public took them seriously.
Perhaps, if the theories are true, then America simply lied. Perhaps the Soviets did, too. If you're looking for an explanation that makes as much sense to me as anything else.

Good point, if they had any reason at all to believe it was fake they definitely would have exposed it. I don't believe most think these conspiracy theories are real their just fun to think about in a what if scenario.
