I'm mostly on the right and have to tolerant their religious zealotry which makes a good party average but what is the effect of the zealots on the left?

Secular right. The reason is a lot of ppl that are very religious have been turned off by the manner the church has isolated itself in politics... I'm saying it's like when you go to church (here in the South anyways), you don't dare say you are a democrat and that you don't support Bush.

I know quite a good many ppl that used to go to church periodically that now say they never want to step foot in one ever again.

Religious fanaticism is not good because most of them become violent and even turn to terrorism.
