I think that in this particular comparison you have to look at a body of work over time.

Coppola has some incredible films under his belt, but not since Apocolypse Now has he really made a societal dent.

Scorsese has made impactful films since the late 70's and he seems to be getting better with age. Take the last 5 years as an example. And if you think about what Clint Eastwood has done at his age in 5 years, it's scary how much Matry can do in the next 20 years.

My pick is definitely Scorsese and his newly deserved Oscar.

Hard to say. Loved Godfather I and II, thought Apocalypse Now was incredible. Rumblefish had some interesting effects (plus Mickey Rourke, Matt Dillon, Nicholas Cage, Diane Lane, Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper and Laurence Fishburne) for 1983. I'd give a slight edge to Coppola for variety.

Martin Scorsese should have gotten an Oscar for Raging Bull...

The Oscar he received on Sunday, Feb 25, 2007, was long, very long, ...overdue.

Scorsese is the best. He doesn't make or direct some thinly disguised history lesson and he's great with special effects.

Of the two, Martin Scorsese hands down. He tells more interesting stories. There are a handful of really great directors out there anymore, and you named only two.

The other greats are:
Clint Eastwood
Ron Howard
Steven Spielberg
Stephen Soderberg
Robert Zemeckus
Rob Riener

perplexing to declare. enjoyed Godfather I and II, theory Apocalypse Now became astonishing. Rumblefish had some interesting effects (plus Mickey Rourke, Matt Dillon, Nicholas Cage, Diane Lane, Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper and Laurence Fishburne) for 1983. i might supply a tender component to Coppola for type.
