It may be slightly embarrassing at first, but just remember the doctor/nurse has seen it all a million times before and thinks nothing of it. You can even ask for a female to do it if this makes you more comfortable, or ask if a 2nd person (another dr or nurse).

After you are on the table and the speculum (the instrument that is used to open the vagina more so that the dr can see inside and looks like the bill of a duck) is inserted and they are ready to do the pap smear the dr will then take a little brush to scrape some of the cells from your cervix. They then set it on a slide that is sent off to the lab for analysis to make sure that there are no abnormalities. The results come back in about 4 weeks but I had it come back after a week one time.
There may be a bit of spotting for a day or two due to the irritation of the brush used but this is normal. If it continues past that then it's not normal.
It is true that it could be embarrassing at first.
Yes, the exam and pap could feel uncomfortable if one is tense so I recommend relaxing. As for pain itself neither the pelvic exam nor the pap should hurt but if it does that means that something is wrong such as an infection.

Well it's a little embarrassing and uncomfortable... but you have to remember that your doctor does this everyday... they aren't nervous about it, it's just their job.
You'll go into the room, they'll give you a gown... put it on with the opening to the back. Climb up on the table. The doctor will come in and probably do normal things like test your blood pressure, listen to your heart and lungs, etc. They may do a breast exam... no big deal... non-sexual, they just feel for lumps.
Next, you'll be asked to lie down on the table, and put your feet in the stirrups (you just rest your heels in them). They will probably insert the speculum now (using lots of KYJelly). Once it's inside you, it will... click, click, click to open it. The doctor then does the pap smear, which you will barely feel, if at all. The doctor will then remove the speculum, and then probably perform an internal exam. Yes, they put their fingers up there, but it's in no way a sexual thing. While they are in there they are pushing down on your abdomen to feel your internal organs... this doesn't hurt either.
And that's about it. Some people count the holes in the ceiling, some talk to the doctor... there's no reason to be embarrassed. It's very important that you get this done if you are sexually active.

It's just your doc or a nurse and you. It's no big deal and takes less than a minute. It can be a bit uncomfortable esp if you are tight or tensed, but it really isn't bad at all. Essentially, they insert a device to open you a little bit (very little) and they swab. No biggie
