I think the building holds symbolic meaning for Damon's character. For a poor kid from southie to afford a home with a swank Beacon Hill address is a measure of his success, achievement and place in the world. The price for that success, of course, came at the expense of all integrity, morality and ultimately, his life .

In Boston, Beacon Hill is kind of a refuge within the turbulant city. It is kind of a village within the larger urban sprawl. It kind of represents a "safe house" for the people (in particular young kids from poorer neighborhoods who long for something greater).

So in the film I see the significance as just that for Damon's character. He grew up in the slums and ended up in Nicholson's crew and got closer to Beacon Hill as he became a more powerful cop/inside man. He wanted to be in sight of that "safe" place.
