You're going to have to define free. Free for you or free for everyone? Cuz if you want to get music off limewire or kazaa, then no, it is very much illegal. If you don't give about copyright infringements and the like, then feel free, be a criminal with some music.

Pick an artist you like, and go to thier website. Sometimes they have a few songs that you can legally download for free.
