No draft? What would the Grizzlies have to look forward to every year?
If there was no draft and every player was a free agent coming out of college the same 5 teams would get all the talent. Everyone would want to play for the Lakers because of Hollywood. The Mavericks to get some of that Cuban money. The Knicks because its New York and they have all of that TV money to pay players with. Miami b/c of the weather and the girls.
The San Antonio Spurs would cease to exist along with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Bucks, Raptors, Bobcats, and a whole host of other teams.
It'd be bad for the NBA..... although it would be curious to see what players would choose to go to a team like the Spurs where the coaching staff would make them work defensively and improve to play a team game. What players would do that of their own free will, I'd be interested to see that

It's supposed to help the bad teams get back on their feet and make for a more competitive team instead of the top teams getting better all the time and the bad teams continuing to struggle
that's why there's also a salary cap

The guys who get drafted set the salary bar for each pick afterwards. Sort of a reward for being so sought after. Truth be told, if they didn't sign those contracts before touching the court, some of them might be cut before being offered one (Darko Milicic for example).

THe theory is that the worst NBA team will get the best players out of college BUT that doesn't account for team chemistry, needs and coaching. Phil Jackson can beat yours with his or his with yours.

I beleive its for the money and tradition if you ask me.. If you sign at say a lottery pick thats gonna be way more than a 2nd round pick and definetaly way more than a non-drafted free agent.. I beleive also that everyone has pretty much gone to their draftee's so it's kind of like tradition too.
