My computer is Windows XP. I want to record music from my radio onto my PC via the "Line In" port. I of course have checked for the proper wiring. I want to say that I am lacking some type of software but I am not sure. I have tried the embedded sound recorder in Win XP but no luck. Thanks for the help.

An excellent, and free program to accomplish what you want to do is called "Audacity". It's available at the below link, as well as a plug-in called "LAME mp3 encoder". Download both and install the LAME mp3 encoder in the same folder as the Audcity program. It allows for recording not only line-in, but also from other sources. Good luck!

Make sure that you have adjusted the Volume properties for recording, as opposed to playback. Select Options \ Properties, and click the Recording button.

The built-in sound recorder program is good for confirming that everything is connected and selected properly. You'll get better results recording with Audacity, which you can google and download for free.
