You're always on your cycle...it lasts all month. You don't ovulate when you're on your period, if that's what you mean. Okay, here's how this works: you only ovulate one day out of the month, and the egg lives for two days. But sperm can live inside you for as long as six days! So there are 8 days out of your cycle when you can get pregnant. (whether yours is 25 days, 28 days, or 32 days, this pretty much holds true for anyone) However, you don't know exactly what day you ovulate, unless you're using an ovulation predictor kit that most people use when they're trying to get pregnant. THat would be pretty expensive to use for your whole life to try NOT to get pregnant. Every woman's ovulation comes at different times in their cycle or "month", so don't assume that certain days are safe for you to have unprotected sex (unless you WANT a baby). Get on birth control or have your guy use a condom...every time.

Sperm can live in a womans body for around 3-5 days. So... if you have sex before you've ovulated there is a chance. And if you do not know for certain when you ovulate (as this can sometimes change) you can really get pregnant any time during your cycle... but, yes, an egg must be released in order to become pregnant.

Well no, however you must be 100% that you are not ovulating to ensure that pregnancy does not occur.
If you are a young women and you have ovaries then there is always a risk you may spontaneously ovulate, no matter what time of the month it is. And if you have an intact reproductive system (fallopan tubes, uterus etc), then if you have intercourse pregnancy is also a risk.
Even if you have not started your periods yet, it is possible you may spontaneously ovulate just prior to your first period happening, so even late bloomers cannot rely on this as a contraceptive strategy.
Sperm can also live inside your body for several days after ejaculation, so be aware that intercourse prior to ovulation may also result in a pregnancy as sperm that are hanging around could easily fertilise an egg immediately after it is released. In fact, this is usually how it happens.
Unless you are trying to concieve, use contraception each and every time you have sex, to minimise your chances of an unwanted or unexpected pregnancy. Also use condoms unless you are in a monogamous relationship with a confirmed disease free partner.

Yes, you have to be ovulating in order to get pregnant. *Most* women ovulate in the very middle of their cycle (ie: the time farthest away from their period). On a regular 28 day cycle (get your period every 28 days)You ovulate around 14 days after the first day of your period. But, if your cycle is longer than 28 days that number may change (generally ovulation occurs in the very middle of your cycle hence the 14th day for a 28 day cycle). You can buy an ovulation kit that will let you know when you are ovulating & when to have sex, etc. There are also some things you can do without buying a kit that will help let you know when you are (about to be) ovulating. Here is a website that explains the suggestions

Yes, sperm can live in your body for more than a day. I had heard up to 4 days but that is just too gross to think about.
Also, it is difficult to tell where in your cycle ovulation occurs. It is not consistant and you can even ovulate while you are on your period. That is why the 'rythem method' created such large families.
