ok i bought this bike and the exhaust is all rusted out. now i want to put a single can on it like the sport bikes or should i go back to the stock way of having 2 cans. what r the pros and cons of the single can or the 2 cans.

Single can is OK especially if your doing headers. However, however however, this is where most fail miserably here. When using headers and changing exhaust you need to have the carbs rejeted. Another thing about the Xj is its high RPM's. This bike has a Kick at 6000 rpm's. Thus the single can might be a noise ordinance issue.

You also want to check the ground clearance on some of the singles/headers available. I own an '81 model with stock exhaust, but I had two different friends with the same bike that ran headers. I don't remember the brand, but one guy would drag the pipe any time he made a slight left turn, and I do mean slight. It would scare the hell out of me anytime I rode his bike.
