Before answering this question, one must define "win". The U.S. won the battle (twice) with Iraq, but most would agree that the war goes on.

To answer the question that I believe you are asking is yes, the U.S. military could defeat the Iranian military in a force-on-force type of engagement. The U.S. has better trained, though fewer, soildiers than Iran. Our equipment, on land, sea and air, is far superior.

While Iran currently has 4 armored divisions and 6 infantry divisions (and assorted special forces elements), more than half of their soldiers are conscripts (draftees). Of their estimated 350,000 soldiers, 200,000 are estimated to be draftees with little training or experience. Their equipment has taken a toll from their conflict with Iraq and they have not had the resources to repair or replace their losses.

While the U.S. ground forces are heavily engaged in Iraq, they would have a difficult time defeating and holding ground in Iran. Having said that, the ability to devastate Iran's infrastructure with air and naval strikes remain. The assets currently deployed in the Persian Gulf alone are sufficient to render them incapable of ascerting any type of offensive operation. Ground forces would be required to "mop-up" and seize key objectives within the country.

Potential Threats to U.S. interests:

Iran is trying to acquire medium to long range ballistic missiles (No Dong I) that could prove to be a serious threat to the region. Currently, they possess only the (Scud type) missile that are both short range and inaccurate. Additionally, they have recently purchased the C802 cruise missile (China and North Korea) that are a potential threat to both land and sea based assets. Fortunately, they have the sea and fixed platforms only (no mobile platform yet) that are relatively easy to locate and destroy.

I guess I have rattled on. I could have just said that the USA would win.

It depends on the nature of the mission. If we are to do a repeat of sorts of Gulf War Part 1 ,where our goal is not occupation or regime change but something of a lesser scale (such as destroying their conventional or non-conventional ( nuclear or otherwise) militaty capability) then we would clearly, without question would win, though some casualties would be inevitable ( probably more than we suffered in the initial phases of the current Iraq war.) On the other hand, if we plan to occupy, then I would say it is clearly possible we could "win" (maintain order, suffer less casualties overall than they would) , granted that we did it RIGHT this time, meaning 500,000+ troops, in every major city and along ALL of the countries borders, with every major source of opposition "shocked and awed" with no delay. However, in this scenario, we would have to accept many more (possible many times more) casaulties than we have in Iraq. Spin-off attacks would also probably occur on US interests abroad outside the immediate warzone ( U.S. bases in Europe, Asia, etc.) In the end, I'd say it's doable, but not a piece of cake by any stretch.

The main problem is that a war between Iran and US won't involve only those two countries and it won't be just a regional conflict...This will lead to WW3...and there are not going to be any winners...
But ,if hypothetically, will involve only those 2 countries,I would say Iran has the capability to defeat US at this moment...

Get serious. The USA would crush the Iranian military in two weeks. A month tops. That's why Iran is so desperate to come up with nukes.

There won't be war with Iran unless oil goes under $30 a barrel.
Of course as erratic as the Bush Regime has been acting anything is possible.

I like sorneez answer.

The thing is the US Army is stretched pretty thin these days. One has to ask where would you get people to fight such a war?

i believe that USA would win fdor one reason.-Israel-, Iran is full of muslims, no? Radical muslims want to kill Israel, correct? and Israel won't fall again because the Bible says it won't, correct again? and Israel needs(or prefers to have) america's help, america will make it easier for Israel to prevail, although they would anyway. so that's why i belive USA would win. i also think we would win because we kick *** and pwn everything in sight.(lol?)

NO ONE WINS IN A WAR! PRESIDENT BUSH IS AN IDIOT FOR CONSIDERING IT OR TRYING TO BRAINWASH THE PUBLIC IN BELIEVING THAT IRAN IS A THREAT, ITS NOT A THREAT. WHATS THE PROOF THAT IT IS A THREAT? A STICKER PLACED ON BOMBS THAT CLAIMS IT WAS MADE IN IRAN???????????
