My media computer is hooked up to a TV, and it's also hooked up to my local network. I can Remote Desktop to my media computer (from my laptop), but when I do that, it cuts off the signal going to my TV. Is there a way to use Remote Deskop to control my media computer, and have the output also going to a VGA device ( in this case my TV )?

Yes, get vnc. Its a free virtual network program that will allow you to control any of your computers from anywhere. I use it withe vlc media player to stream movies to my office. First i use vnc to remotely control my computer at home. I load a movie into vlc and stream it out over the web. Then I just have to start up vlc at work and watch the movie. I guess you don't really need to stream the video, so you won't need vlc. But vnc would allow you to sit on the couch with you laptop and control another computer connected to your tv. One thing though. If you open a video file it will not show on your laptop screen because the bandwith would be too high. It will appear as a black screen.
