The computer game was based on the real Oregon Trail, but was of course much simplified. If you were setting out for the Oregon territory in 1843 - 1900 you would have brought most of your worldly possessions, but the ones you should have left behind were fancy dresses, unnecessary furniture (it would be too much weight for the oxen to pull) and perishable food. The things you should not do were to drink standing water (it would often kill you), eat plants you didn't know what they were, or intentionally provoke the Indians/Native Americans by stealing their horses, taking their wives, or shooting them without trying to be friends first.

Only bring one wife. If you are a Mormon, go to Salt Lake City.

Bring flour, bacon, and beans. Leave the paino at home. Bring a guitar or harmonica instead.

Go west. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Don't pick a fight with the Indians. Don't travel alone.

Bring tools to repair your wagon, if necessary. This is especially important for your wheels.

Bring a hat and some blankets.

Don't bring anything too heavy--such as furniture. It's a long way by covered wagon (or pack mule), so you want only essential things, such as food, tools, clothing, quilts, farming equipment.
