Hwther it's a girl or a boy. People do ask about parents when it comes to important issues like marraige. Parents play a vital role in development of your character. By knowing about the parents people generlize about the environment they have been though and thus they are able to evaluate ones character. Nothing wrong with it...

Your question is not clear.Someone can not have parents either they are divorced or no more.Actually see upbringing and family background seems to play a very important role in arrange marriages since in such marriages the girl is expected to get along with all the family members.But in case of love marriage nothing is left to ask.That does not mean that arrange marriage is more successful than love but asking about parents is a crucial formality.
Not only about girls but even boys are too enquired for the same.So chill.

Seriously you need to rephrase so we can better answer this for you ... if you are talking about a girl gettign married and she has no parents what to do , I would say she can ask an uncle , brother or grandfather to give her away ... if this is not what you talking bout then I dont know what to tell you

parents/family lineage is asked for to know about a person's background.
family background plays an important role in the development of a person-the upbringing, education, values and morals etc.
