Coming from someone who has experience (in myself and with those close to me, as well as many acquaintances) in my own battles, I find that prayer is more successful. Finding something that distracts me from those pesky and often entangling thoughts, something which takes concentration, such as yoga, or meditation exercises, or a personal hobby/craft, often would re-set my mind towards something positive as well as completely taking away my concentration on the obsessive/compulsive thoughts. No one can count numbers and repeat the ABC's at the same time for example. The link below was a good start for me a while ago for meditation technique.

However, I would highly stress to you to seek some sort of counseling or therapy that you might feel comfortable with just to seek within yourself on what it is exactly that might be interfering. Good luck!

It depends on what kind of thoughts they are. I wouldn't (and nobody should) be too quick to label your thoughts as a sign of OCD.

Are they simply thoughts, or thoughts that indicate intentions to execute an action?

If they are simply thoughts, just indulge in them until they eventually go away will help - in layman's term, you will soon get immune to the thoughts and they would not bother you too much.

For thoughts indicative of possible actions, you may want to perform the actions so as to get rid of the thoughts. Of course, the actions must not be causing potential harm to yourself or to anybody else.

Try to get a distracting hobby, or when you find yourself obsessing, then make a point to stop thinking about it and move on to something else!

If you have OCD sometimes there's not much you can do. Counceling and medication works for some people. Other people just learn to live with what ever compulsions they have.
