Here is the real scientific reason why it snows:

Water enters the atmosphere by evaporation. Eventually that water falls back to earth. It can fall as rain, snow, hail, etc...but all we need to know is the snow part.
There are two types of clouds that precipitation occurs in: cold clouds and warm clouds. Snow forms in cold clouds. Cold clouds have a temperature of below freezing, and are composed of many tiny ice crystals. As more and more water enters the cloud, the ice crystals grow larger. Eventually, the ice crystals get too large to remain suspended in the air, and begin to fall. As they fall, they tend to pick up more ice, growing heavier and bigger until they fragment into billions of little ice crystals are falling from the cloud. As these little ice crystals are falling, they absorb more water. This causes their intricate designs. The design and size of the snowflake depend on the temperature. If the temperature is below freezing, the snowflakes get large, but if the temperature is higher than freezing, the snowflakes are small and powdery.

I hope this is what you needed to know! =)

Evapouration from the seas and oceans produces moisture (water vapour) in the atmosphere. As the moist air rises it cools down, it can also cool down if a mass of warm moist air mixes with a mass of cold dry air. If the temperature of the air falls below the freezing point of water (32 Fahrenheit, 0 Celsius) the water vapiur freezes into tiny ice crystals which join together to form snowflakes.

The snowflakes are too heavy to 'float' in the sky so they fall to earth. As they fall the temperature rises, sometimes what starts out as snow up in the clouds melts on the way down and falls as rain. If the temperature is cold enough the snow makes it all the way to earth without melting.

The principle is the same as for rain, the only difference being that it's cold so the water freezes.

There's a lot more to it than I've described. This article from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow has more info and links that explain the different types of snow such as hail and sleet.

Here's a couple of interesting links to buildings made from snow...

Snow is precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. Since it is composed of small ice particles it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure
