What was the conspiracy movie in the '80s or '90s?

There was a conspiracy movie where this guy finds out that at least his "wife" is part of a conspiracy to study him as part of some grand scale psychological study. He finally describes his ordeal as a "mind f***." As far as I remember, there was no special effects or major stunts in the movie.

This movie was made at least 10 years before the Truman show and it never showed the guys watching the protagonist. It was strictly from the protagonist point of view.
