There are several reasons that Pete Sampras was able to control his shots using a stiff racket with a tension over 70 lbs. First, Pete was very fit, had excellent balance and good body control. Pete was also classically trained growing up with wood rackets. This means he grew up with Stiff and H eavyframes and developed a smooth classic stroke perfect for his frame and style of play. Pete also used babolat Vs. Gut string which offers more resilency than any synthetic on the market. His racket being strung at 70lbs. is the same as another player stringing their synthetic at 63lbs in terms of feel and softness of the string bed. Lastly. Pete Sampras is a one of the most talented players in the history of the sport and he could hit the true center of the stringbed more often than 98% of the other players on tour.

Two things:

- That racquet was not just stiff, but also very heavy and with a small head (compared to recreational racquets). Some years ago I read a report that said it was close to 16 oz. As long as the ball was hit correctly, this racquet gave a very controlled, consistent response.
- Pete was physically fit to swing that racquet throughout a five set match.

well...his strokes were so unbelievably perfect he culdve played with an old english lawn tennis racquet...he didnt need the power and therefore he was able to take the extra control the stiff racquet gave him and use it to his advantage...also the prostaff has amazing feel at the net..which is probably why he used it

Those specs are exactly what gave him control. He basically used a 2x4, much like Borg did in his day. Both these guys relied on their swing to generate power, not their racquets.

High string tension gives you more control and less power, while lower tension gives more power and less control.
