The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804−1806) was the first United States overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back, led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark of the United States Army. It is also known as the Corps of Discovery.

They helped to discover a more vast land than was expected. People on the East coast thought that there was nothing in the West and decided to send Native Americans out there. Little did they realize that the Great Plains is one of the greatest farming areas in the world. That area produces a surplus of wheat in one year that could survive a 10 year famine. Had it not been for these two it would have not been first documented, and as the guys said above, led to the manifest destiny.
