To prevent character recognition software from easily reading the characters and put them in. Orignally, the pictures were put in to stop automated systems from signing up and downloading stuff. But since software now exists, that, given enough time, a computer could recognize the characters. That's why they are squiggly, to prevent recognition from computers.

It's to keep the spam-bots out of the site, these codes you see are images, not text, and bots are not able to "read" them
